About Da Book Joint
Da Book Joint was born from a simple truth: once we discovered the depth, beauty, and brilliance of books — across every genre —written by Black authors and centering Black lives, we knew we had to share them with our community.
Growing up in a book desert, we rarely saw ourselves reflected on the shelves. We rarely had access to stories that affirmed our identities, expanded our imaginations, or showcased the fullness of Black joy, history, creativity, and complexity. That absence lit a fire in us.
Opening Da Book Joint on the South Side of Chicago in an underrepresented community just like the one that shaped us —was our answer to that gap. We wanted to build a space where books by Black authors are not the exception, but the foundation. A place where children, teens, and adults can walk in and see themselves, their families, their neighborhoods, and their dreams in the pages of a book.
Da Book Joint exists because we believe access to stories can transform communities. And now, we’re committed to making sure no one grows up feeling like we did ... unseen on the shelves. Here, representation isn’t a trend. It’s our mission.
